Earning the Jersey: Inside FBU Tryouts for Team Utah
Before the lights of Nationals, there is the tryout: the day Utah's best young players compete for a spot on Team Utah and the right to represent the state at FBU.

Long before Team Utah takes the field under the Florida lights, the roster has to be earned. It starts with the tryout.
Football University, better known as FBU, gathers some of the country's top young players, and the path onto Team Utah runs through open competition where coaches watch every rep. Speed drills, position work, one-on-ones: it is a day built to separate the players who want it most from the ones who only think they do.
What the tryout asks
The tryout is equal parts talent and grit. Players show up knowing that a single afternoon can decide whether they wear the Team Utah jersey at the FBU tournament. The coaches are not only timing the fastest or measuring the strongest. They are watching for the athletes who compete on every snap and carry themselves like teammates before they have a team.
For many of these kids, it is the first time lining up against the best the state has to offer, and the standard rises to meet them. Some press too hard and fade. Others settle in, find their footing, and play their way onto the roster in front of everyone.
Watch the tryout
Spectator Sport Media was on the field for it. The ones who made it walked away with more than a roster spot. They walked away knowing they belong. Watch the full tryout coverage below.
